Understanding Anxiety: What It Feels Like, What It Is, and How Holistic Therapy Can Help
Anxiety is a word we hear so often, yet when you’re the one experiencing it, it can feel deeply personal—confusing, overwhelming, and sometimes isolating.
At Nurture Wellness by Sarah, I believe in understanding anxiety from the inside out so you can feel empowered, supported, and connected throughout your healing journey.
Today, I want to talk about what anxiety really is, how it often feels in the body and mind, the weight and toll of living with it, and how a holistic approach to therapy can guide you back to balance.
What Anxiety Really Is
Anxiety is a natural human response—your body’s built-in alarm system designed to protect you from danger.
When this system works properly, it helps you stay alert, solve problems, and react quickly when needed.
But when anxiety becomes constant or disproportionate to the moment…
…it stops being helpful.
…it starts taking over.
…it begins to feel like your body is stuck in “high alert” mode, even when everything around you is safe.
Anxiety can show up in many forms:
Generalised worry
Panic
Social anxiety
Intrusive thoughts
Or Persistent physical tension.
No two experiences are exactly alike—and I want you to know that your experience is valid.
What Anxiety Feels Like
People often describe anxiety not just as an emotion, but as a whole-body experience.
Some common sensations include:
In the mind:
Racing or looping thoughts
Feeling overwhelmed or out of control
Difficulty concentrating
Constant “what if?” worries
Feeling detached or “not yourself”
In the body:
Tight chest or shallow breathing
Restlessness or agitation
Insomnia
Heart racing
Digestive discomfort
Muscle tension
Fatigue from being “on edge” all day
Anxiety can make even simple tasks feel enormous. It can color your world in a way that makes everything feel uncertain or urgent.
If you’ve ever thought, “Why can’t I just calm down?”, please know: you’re not broken.
Your nervous system is simply overworked and in need of support—not judgment.
When Anxiety Feels All-Consuming
Anxiety can feel like living in two worlds at once— the one everyone else sees, and the one inside your head that never stops spinning.
On the outside, you might look like you’re holding it together.
But inside - your mind is racing, your body is tense, your heart feels like it’s never at rest, and you long for peace. Yet you feel trapped beneath layers of fear, worry, and what-ifs.
Anxiety isn’t just “nerves,” and it’s not something you can simply think your way out of.
It’s heavy.
It can be relentless.
It can steal moments of joy and connection.
Because you’re too busy fighting invisible battles that no one else can see.
The Weight of Living with Anxiety
Living with anxiety is not easy or peaceful and can make simple tasks like —getting out of bed, making a phone call, driving, meeting a friend— suddenly feel like climbing a mountain.
Your mind tells stories of all the things that could go wrong, and your body reacts as if they already are.
You might notice your chest tightening, your pulse racing, your stomach in knots.
Sleep becomes difficult, restless or broken, and even when you do rest, you wake feeling drained.
Anxiety can creep into every area of life—your work, relationships, health, and sense of self-worth.
It can convince you that you’re not enough, that something bad will always happen, or that you’re somehow failing just by feeling this way.
That voice can be cruel.
And it’s exhausting!!
The Physical Toll
Anxiety doesn’t just live in the head—it settles in the body.
Prolonged stress can lead to physical symptoms like -
Headaches
Digestive issues
Fatigue
Muscle pain
Chronic illness
and even Fluctuations in Appetite or Weight.
Your nervous system remains on high alert, producing hormones and responses meant for short-term survival, not long-term living.
Over time, this can leave the body depleted—burnt out and overwhelmed.
You might begin to feel disconnected from yourself, like you’re just trying to get through each day.
That disconnection is often the body’s way of saying, “I need care too.”
A Holistic Approach to Healing Anxiety
At Nurture Wellness by Sarah, I view anxiety through a holistic lens—understanding that your mind, body, emotions, and environment are deeply connected.
Holistic therapy looks beyond symptoms and explores the whole person.
Instead of trying to “fix” anxiety, we aim to understand it, soothe it, and create balance within your system.
Some of the tools we may explore together include:
Breathwork and Nervous System Regulation
Learning to regulate your breath is one of the quickest ways to signal safety to the body. Slow, intentional breathing can shift you from fight-or-flight into a calmer state.
Mindfulness and Body Awareness
Mindfulness helps you recognize anxious thoughts without getting swept away by them. It reconnects you to the present moment—where anxiety has less power.
Somatic Techniques
Because anxiety often “lives” in the body, somatic therapy helps release stored tension, calm the nervous system, and build a sense of groundedness.
Cognitive Shifts and Emotional Understanding
Together, we explore the beliefs, fears, and past experiences that may be fueling anxiety. Understanding the roots allows you to respond with clarity instead of fear.
Lifestyle and Wellness Practices
Holistic healing also considers sleep, movement, nutrition, boundaries, and self-care routines that support your emotional health and wellbeing.
What You Can Do Right Now
If you’re feeling anxious today, here are some gentle, supportive steps you can take:
Place a hand on your chest and exhale slowly.
A long exhale tells your nervous system: “You are safe.”
Name what you’re feeling out loud.
“Anxiety is here.”
Naming it creates space between you and the feeling.
Move your body for two minutes.
Shake your hands, stretch your arms, or walk around the room. Movement helps release adrenaline.
Slow down your self-talk - Try:
“I’m doing the best I can.”
“This moment will pass.”
“I’m safe, even if I feel uncomfortable.”
Reach out for support.
You don’t have to navigate anxiety alone. Therapy can help you understand your mind and body in a deeper, more compassionate way.
Finding a Way Back to Yourself
Healing from anxiety isn’t about “stopping” it overnight—it’s about learning to understand and soothe it.
It’s giving yourself permission to listen to your body, quiet your mind, and reconnect with the calm that already exists within you (even if you can’t feel it right now).
Through holistic therapy, we can start to bring harmony back into your system.
It’s possible to retrain your nervous system—to help it feel safe again.
Bit by bit, you can reclaim the moments anxiety has stolen.
You don’t have to do this alone.
You Deserve Peace and Balance
Anxiety doesn’t define who you are—it’s simply a signal asking for care, understanding, and attention.
At Nurture Wellness by Sarah, my passion is helping you reconnect with yourself, create calm, and build tools that support your daily life.
Healing is not about perfection—it’s about progress, compassion, and learning to nurture your whole self.
If you’re ready to explore a holistic path to anxiety relief, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you.
Your peace begins with a single step—and you just took one by being here.
